Antibiotics for Acne Increase Linked to Respiratory Infections

June 19, 2006
By

Tweet This is actually a story that developed back in 2005. Another good reason in the argument against acne antibiotic treatment is the following fact. It was found in studies that acne patients who were taking antibiotics to clear their acne were TWICE as likely to develop an upper respiratory infection. There is no clear cut answer as to the link between the antibiotic treatment and increased likelihood of respiratory infection, but it is assumed that patients on antibiotics for more than six weeks at a time were more likely to have a certain type of infectious streptococcus bacteria...

Using Makeup Applicators : Less Bacteria Transmittal?

June 18, 2006
By

Tweet We talked a little about foundations in the last post, more specifically, foundations that do not cause pore blockage and are noncomedogenic (non acne causing).  Now, I wanted to take a minute to talk about application technique, to reduce the likelihood of bacteria transmission.  I do not apply my foundation with my hands, simply because of another previous post we talked about, the bacteria that can be transmitted from my hands to my face.  Instead I use makeup sponge applicators.  Now, using makeup sponges to apply foundation is only good for not transmitting acne causing and aggravating bacteria when...

Foundations that are Good if You Have Acne

June 17, 2006
By

Tweet It can be tricky finding a foundation that is good for your skin if you have acne.  In other words, it’s hard to find one that will not further clog your pores, or aggravate any existing acne by having irritants such as detergent-like ingredients which can redden the skin, or block your pores.  One of my favorites is not actually a “foundation” but rather a very light base coat which provides lighter coverage but also gives your skin a nice shimmer and a little bit of a glow.  It’s Revlon Skinlights, and you’ve probably heard me talk about...

Does Touching Your Face a Lot Aggravate Acne?

June 16, 2006
By

Tweet I remember one of the first things my dermatologist told me back in 1989, when my face first started to erupt in acne lesions, and my day sof clear, youthful skin were gone, and it was to avoid touching my face.  This means resting your face in your hands a lot, picking at your acne, or otherwise touching your face a lot with your hands, especially for long periods of time, as when you are resting your chin in your palm.  An lo and behold, if I did that, wouldn’t you know I’d almost always end up with...

Acne in Women

June 15, 2006
By

Tweet Men and women are very different creatures when it comes to hormonal ups and downs, coupled with the effects it has on our skin and the entire system, both mentally and psychologically. A prime example of this is the way acne manifests in men vs. women. The accelerated hormonal development in pubescent and teenage boys almost always results in acne, but this is not the necessarily the case for girls. Women often develop acne for the first time in their twenties or even later -as I did when I kept getting acne past my college years and on into my...

Sun is Bad for Acne : Proof

June 13, 2006
By

Tweet Well, make that, sun is bad for acne, but I think it’s ok in moderation.  Heck, even in moderation I think should be questioned!  I layed out in the sun about a week ago, it was about 80 degrees outside, and I had a 15 spf sunblock on, by Elizabeth Arden mind you.  I accidentally fell asleep in the sun and ended up with a really glamorous (not) sunburn on half of my body as I didn’t realize some of the shade from the overhang on our patio had obscured the sun from half my body, making the...

Rosacea : Review Coming Soon

June 12, 2006
By

Tweet Rosacea and acne rosacea are another VERY stubborn skin condition that many people struggle with to find the right treatment for.  The biggest problem is, finding a product that is gentle enough, as well as one that does not aggravate the skin with rosacea.  People with rosacea and acne rosacea most often tend to be fair skinned, as well as have very sensitive skin that breaks out in rashes or different kinds of hives at the drop of a hat.  This is precisely why reviewing rosacea and acne rosacea products is so hard, at least to do it...

Doxycycline : Another Acne Antibiotic

June 11, 2006
By

Tweet Well, you know how I feel about treating acne with antibiotics.  I don’t agree with it.  I think it is actually almost an “abuse” of antibiotics, because usually people have to remain on the antibiotic too long, and many become resistent to antibiotics, and not only that, but also they can develop yeast imbalances.  I always recommend people use natural alternative acne treatments instead.  Yeast imbalances are actually for another conversation, and they are a controversial entity, but I truly believe that yeast imbalances can cause a lot of health and mental issues for people, and I do...

Eczema – What is It?

June 10, 2006
By

Tweet This may be slightly off topic, since this is not a skin condition directly related to acne, but I thought it was worth discussing, since it is also a stubborn skin condition like acne, but tends to come and go, unlike acne which unfortunately is usually with us for a LONG time, throughout our teen years and for many of us into our adult years as well. Exczema is also a little like acne because it is inflammatory in nature, meaning it is the result of inflammation beneath the skin, which irritates the upper layers and results in...

Skin Care Products : Confessions of a Product Junkie

June 9, 2006
By

Tweet This is an article I wrote for distribution a little while ago.  It’s sort of my own personal confessions of being a product junkie, roaming from product to product, in search of skin perfection, and occasionally finding a great product, and then occasionally finding the ones that just don’t work….enjoy. This is my personal story of the plethora (yeah, like that word?) of skin care products I’ve tried.  Which products disappointed and which ones delivered on their consumer promises?  Furthermore, which skin care products actually over delivered?  With thousands of skin products looking us in the face today, begging to be...
