The Lithium and Acne Connection

September 12, 2006
By

Tweet Lithium is mostly known to us as a powerful, if not slightly scary antipsychotic and antidepressant drug, which is usually only used on extreme cases of depression and mood disorders.  Lithium can have a variety of side effects, most notably interfering with kidney and liver function reportedly, as well as a possible link to suicidal tendencies in its younger patients.  Not only that, it can also increase acne in its patients.  I thought this was interesting that an antipsychotic and antidepressant drug could possibly increase the likelihood of acne.  It may be due to hormonal changes in response...

Pimple in Your Nostril?

September 11, 2006
By

Tweet I think we’ve all had one of these at one time or another – a pimple in your nostril.  I’ve had pimples in my nostrils several times, and they’re annoying, and sometimes even painful if they’re really inflamed.  I remember I had one that I kept popping, then it would come back again and again.  I think it finally completely went away after a vicious cycles of popping and “growing” back for about 2 months. Pimples that are in your nostrils are a pain to treat, because they are essentially surrounded by irritants such as nose hair, oils...

Frankie Muniz “Had” Acne

September 10, 2006
By

Tweet Ok, so I run a blog on acne, and as a long time acne sufferer, it’s my job to notice EVERYONE’s skin that I run into, whether it be a TV personality, or someone at my 9-5 job, right?  I can’t help it, it’s just bred into me I guess, and only exacerbated because I had acne for so long and studies other’s faces to see if they also had it, to make myself feel better when I was a teen… Anyways, I was watching an E! Network True story on child stars and they mentioned Frankie Muniz,...

Acne Spot Treatments : Only Meant for Small Areas

September 9, 2006
By

Tweet It occurred to me that I used to constantly do this, so I thought I might share the knowledge that it’s not such a good idea for those that didn’t really think it was a big deal. I’m referring to the use “acne spot treatments”. These types of acne treatment creams or serums are called “spot” treatments because they are potent, and are designed to only be applied to local, smaller areas where acne has taken up residence. In other words, they should only be dabbed on the acne itself, not rubbed allover the face, as some may...

Interesting Article on Cosmeceuticals

September 8, 2006
By

Tweet There was an interesting article on cosmeceuticals, or the combination of pharmaceuticals, which are a government regulated entity that provide medications which can chemically alter the functions of our body, and cosmetics, which may not be advertised that way, but rather “cosmetically” cover or alter the appearance of certain body attributes.  It said that there are so many new products coming out that are both cosmetic and pharmaceutical grade in nature that the cosmetics companies are actually getting a little nervous about becoming a regulated industry, because their anti aging, acne treating and other skin care technologies are...

PMS Acne : The Worst!

September 7, 2006
By

Tweet Speaking as a woman, I have to say that PMS is bad enough, it’s even worse when you add a fresh zit or two of full fledged acne breakout to the mix.  PMS, or premenstrual syndrome is a controversial syndrome which some believe may not actually exist except for in the woman’s mind, although I will refute that statement!  PMS is the week or two before a woman’s period when her hormones (arguably) fluctuate, in preparation for the shedding of the uterine wall, hence the period or bleeding that occurs during menses, or menstruation.  Many women report a...

Acne Rosacea in Adults

September 6, 2006
By

Tweet Acne rosacea is a combination of two of the most stubborn skin conditions we know : acne vulgaris and rosacea.  Acne, as we all know is basically an inflammation of various areas of the skin, which form bumps, pustules, whiteheads and blackheads, and basically peppers our face with “land mines”, which scab over and don’t look so attractive when they’re being treated. Rosacea is also a skin disorder that has everything to do with inflammation, it’s just manifested in a slightly different way than it is with acne.  Acne has areas of inflammation, whereas rosacea inflames the skin...

Darn Whiteheads!

September 5, 2006
By

Tweet I had an interesting zit recently (ok, today).  It started as one of those little bumps, just above my lip – and I hate when I get zits on my upper lip – it makes me feel as though greasy food is causing them or something.  I thought it would just dry up and go away, but lo and behold, I woke up this morning to a whitehead!  Why do I sound surprised?  Because living with acne for so many years, I thought I really new my acne bumps by now, and this one looked to be a perfectly...

Amish and Acne : Random Thoughts

September 4, 2006
By

Tweet I was at a flea market today out in a remote part of Ohio with my boyfriend today, and saw many young Amish girls and women.  Don’t ask me why, but I was surprised to see one of the girls, who looked to be in her early twenties or possibly just about twenty years old, with fairly bad acne.  I know, I know, I guess I stereotyped in my mind, but I guess since I assumed Amish individuals live a certain, more seemingly wholesome and less stressful and expectant lifestyle than most of us, they would not be...

Murad Acne Complex : Week Three

September 3, 2006
By

Tweet So, I’ve had my Murad Acne Complex treatment system for about three weeks now (if you remember or see previous posts on this subject, I bought the starter kit after my skin broke out from a few days of eating bad and stress).  I’m always willing to try new stuff, so I can add it to my growing list of acne product reviews and I’d heard some good things about the kit, so I ordered it for the trial, which I think also signs you up for a monthly delivery (I cancelled it – I think that is annoying). ...
