Doxycycline Also Used for Lung Damage
One of the more prevalent acne drugs of the tetracycline antibiotic family, which of course I’m not a fan of to treat acne since I don’t agree with treating acne with long term antibiotic use, called Doxycycline, is being looked at now as a possible, actually, a very probable, treatment for those that have lung tissue damage thanks to the very serious lung disease emphysema.
Doxycycline is actually thought to be able to prevent lung tissue damage before it even happens in patients with the lung disease, and is also used as a common treatment for urinary tract infection and sinus infections due to its antibiotic nature. The problem for people with lung tissue damaging diseases is that they suffer a shortage of a certain protein that protects the delicate tissue in the lungs, and this is what causes them to be so easily damaged when one has a disease that causes great trauma to it.
Researchers found that in animals with a reduced amount of this proteing benefitted by getting much less lung tissue damage when they were simultaneously given the antibiotic drug Doxycycline. They were especially impressed that the group who was given the acne antibiotic showed less damage than the group who was also receiving less of the protein, but no antibiotic.
While this is very promising news for this relatively simple multipurpose antibiotic of the tetracycline family, researchers are careful to note that it is not a “cure” for lung tissue damage and certainly not a cure for emphysema, and they have a long way to go before any treatment regimen would be developed, but that nonetheless it is a big development in helping patients with emphysema prevent lung tissue damage which further advances the degenerative lung disease.

Vitamin C Supplements for Skin
If you’ve ever read one of Dr. Perricone’s books about skin care, he delves into a lot of healthy alternatives to cosmetic surgery and expensive procedures, and really concentrates on supplementing the body inside out to achieve good skin, whether your goal is to maintain a great complexion at any age, to hold off the aging factors of the skin such as sagging and wrinkles and sunspots, or even to help with other skin problems like eczema, rosacea, and acne.
One of the common denominators in most of his literature is how you should take a good vitamin C ester supplement for good skin, pretty much no matter what your skin care goals are, ie aging prevention, acne treatment, rosacea or acne rosacea treatment and other skin care problems. I have also read in many other places that vitamin C is a vital component to maintaining healthy skin, and have even seen a visible improvement in the tone and texture of my skin since I began taking my vitamin C supplement.
Not only that though, because I believe that good nutrition and vitamins cannot all be obtained through a supplement or pill, I’ve made sure to include high vitamin C and high antioxidant foods in my daily diet. Examples of this are lemon juice in my water every day, oranges and other citrus fruits a couple days a week, and then other foods naturally high in antioxidants besides vitamin C, so that I can be sure I’m getting a well rounded diet of high power foods that will help fix my complexion problems and make my skin more luminous.
Vitamin C is shown to be a very powerful antioxidant, and has incredible restorative powers to the health of the cells, including skin cells, which can benefit anyone, no matter what their skin type. Apparently, there are some vitamin C supplements that are made so that they will not upset the stomach, so those of you who avoid this vitamin supplement because of that should be able to take that type of version without any stomach issues because of the acidity.

Murad Acne Mask at Night for New Zits
I have been using the same old trick at night for years when it comes to a blemish that I can just feel blanching the surface of my skin, before it becomes a full on red, erupted and scar-worthy zit on my face. It’s really nothing special. All I do is apply my mask, whatever kind it happens to be that I have laying around. For a while it was a zenmed acne mask, then it was a Proactiv mask, and now I have a mini sized Murad acne mask that has lasted me forever that I got free with my face wash last time I purchased from them.
They are all a mud type mask, that is very thick and almost a chalky consistency, so thick that it will stay put as soon as you slick it on over a zit, or a burgeoning zit, as I do. You should just need enough so as to cover the zit itself and only then the immediate surrounding area, careful not to put too much on around the radius fo the bump itself so that you don’t accidentally overdry the skin around it, which can end up looking worse than the zit itself.
I do this at night and then I leave it on all night long, and sometimes it works to clear it up, but if it’s a really hormonal zit that’s destined to come through the surface and hasn’t stopped gathering inertia toward becoming a full fledge boil sized zit on my face, it will only make it a tad bit more dried up, and I’ll still have to go through the motions of caring for the zit once it completely breaks through the skin’s surface.
If you catch a new zit when it has just started to hurt a little bit, and you can see a faint bit of red and a very beginning of a bump or irriation in the spot where the bumpd is about to sprout into a full fledged zit, then you can often catch it and get it to go down if you just apply some sort of reputable acne cream, or my favorite is a thicker mask because it stays put and doesn’t come off all night until you wash it off, as long as you don’t accidentally rub it while it’s still wet.
As I sit here typing this, I have a dot of the mask on my face, on a brand new bump that surfaced today because of the massive stress I’ve had to deal with today getting things organized and looking over documents that I didn’t understand for hours, as well as catching up on many things for work that were on deadline. One minute it wasn’t there, the next I happened to look in the mirror and there it was! Oh well, what are masks for. Hopefully this one will be tamed by the mask!

Can Exercise Help with Acne?
Well, this is probably a very far fetched conclusion, but I believe that being active and exercising as a daily or every other day occurrence, or at least 3-4 days per week getting some cardio and some muscle work in, could be good for your acne and for your overall skin. I speak out of personal experience, because out of all the other numerous health benefits that I know I get from maintaining a regular exercise routine, I know that working out also helps me maintain my skin, keep it younger, acne free and also with that special healthy glow.
Like I said, I make this statement out of personal experience rather than reading somewhere that it’s been medically proven or the like, since I’ve never actually heard acne and exercise correlated in the same sentence before. However, when I thought about it, it really does make sense that exercise can help us maintain clear skin and healthy pores, since exercise helps regulate our hormones by helping to alleviate stress, which can trigger certain acne causing hormones to release in our bodies.
Just the fact that exercise helps us to relieve stress and anxiety makes me believe that it’s good for our skin, and that part of it anyways, has been medically documented, that it helps reduce stress. We always talk about how stress is a very common acne breakout trigger, and it’s true. The more we stress out and feel anxious, the more likely we are to experience an acne breakout in the near future some time.
Exercise also helps to release endorphins, which can help us regulate our homones, and it also increases circulation, which is great for luminous, clear skin as many regular exercise enthusiasts will tell you in a heartbeat. Last but not least, it benefits our heart health, and also our many other organs, and when our organs are functioning properly this usually will show itself in our skin. Bottom line, even if exercise does not help acne specifically, it definitely can make a huge impact on the overall appearance of your skin.

L’Oreal Noticeable Difference SPF 15 Good Sunblock
L’Oreal, one of my favorite “drugstore” makeup and cosmetic product brands, has a line that is relatively low priced that includes some creams that are suitable for the daytime that contain a high SPF of 15 in them that I have found do not break me out.
I happened to find the line Noticeable Difference when it was on sale at a TJ Maxx type store by where I live for even less than drugstore prices I’m sure, and thought I’d use it this summer on my face as a light moisturizer under my foundation which also has an SPF of 15 in it to keep sun damage at bay during the harsh sunlight months of the summer here in Ohio.
The one I chose is a simple moisturizing cream that helps to keep moisture in, and is not any kind of intensive moisturizer or intense anti aging cream, sometimes of which can be harmful to acne prone skin since they contain way too many heavy emollients that can clog the pores and cause acne postules to form on the face, namely in the chin, nose and forehead area where oil tends to form the most to begin with.
It’s a very light formula, and it has no artificial coloring in it which is great for the skin as well. It is almost a whipped consistency. As far as moisturizing I would say it doesn’t do any better than any other drugstore brand and there is nothing really miraculous about the way it makes my skin look, but I love that it has the SPF in it, so I use it primarily as a sun proection factor and not really as a skin improvement cream.

Antibiotics and Ibuprofen Discussion on Skin
A reader had this further to discuss on the possibility of ibuprofen and antibiotics affecting skin breakouts, and I thought I would share.
Also - the funny thing is that I called the Pharmacist and said that the break out is probably because of the antibiotic, Amoxicillin because it’s “stronger” — for whatever that means. It could be very well be the case. For some reason though, my story relates too well to yours and I feel that it was probably the vicodin that caused the acne break out. Are you familiar, by any chance, if the antibiotic could have been a caused of the break out?
Our response :
Hello! Unfortunately I don’t know what the rash would have been from, but I can tell you I’ve NEVER had a breakout or anything close to it from ibuprofen, so I doubt that would be it. Also, you said the pharmacist said it may have been the antibiotic, which I think might be unlikely, seeing how antibiotics like tetracycline are commonly used to treat acne, and usually do not aggravate it to my knowledge. However, I’m not a pharmacist or doctor, so I’m only speaking from experience

Vicodin Breakout Question from Reader
I received the following question from a new reader about Vicodin - she too experienced breakouts while on the popular strong pain reliever prescribed for oral surgeries and several other types of serious pain, and had this question about it’s effects on the skin.
You posted this comment on AcneMagazine.com, and I’ve responded. thanks!
Question :
I am so glad I found this site. I just had two of my wisdom teeth out and was prescribed antibiotics and vicodin. As Tonya mentioned, I am having acne breakouts that I never had in my life…worse than when I was a teenager. I have been trying to figure out if the break-outs were from the antibiotics or the vicodin. Hearing from other experiences makes me feel better. I have stopped use of vicodin for a couple days now and I think the break outs were delayed reaction. How soon did your skin clear up after? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hi there! Thanks for reading this blog, we always love aquiring new readers who can share experiences! Yeah, with the Vicodin, it was a delayed response for me. I noticed my skin flare up big time about 2-3 days after I started taking it, and since I always correlate anything that speeds up my heart rate with breaking out, I knew that it had to be the Vicodin that was breaking me out.
I’m not exactly sure if Vicodin causes hormonal changes, but I wouldn’t doubt it since many stimulants and downers have been known to interfere with hormonal balance and trigger changes in the hormones testosterone and estrogen, which is pretty much trouble for acne sufferers.
I discontinued the use of Vicodin (weening off, of course, you never want to quit this kind of stuff cold turkey), and noticed that my skin cleared up about 4 days later. It must have just been a matter of getting it all out of my system, but my skin did pretty much return to normal after that. I’m not sure how this can be avoided if you’re on this class of pain relievers, and that thing that stinks is that certain surgeries require stronger pain meds, and many over the counter ones that won’t touch that pain, like Tylenol, of course don’t cause the same skin flare up issues as the serious narcotic pain relievers like Vicodin.
I hope this helps a bit. Rest assured, the damage isn’t permanent and your skin will return to normal. Just try not to pick at them so you won’t get any scarring leftovers.

Diet and Acne Question
Hi!!!
I was wondering if you ever did the Master Cleanse? If you did, was it a success with you acne?
Hi Vicky. Yes, I have tried the Master Cleanse diet, but unfortunately I could not make it far enough on the rigorous fasting diet to determine whether it was of benefit to my skin or not. However, I can say that I experienced no breakouts at all during the almost 3 days I was on the diet, and it did seem that I was starting to achieve a sort of clarity in my skin that I had only seen when I was on a really good role with my diet (ie, eating lots of fruits and veggies, limiting meat and carbs etc.)
The Master Cleanse diet has been widely reported by it’s users to help clear up the skin and a massively big help to the skin in many ways, not just to help clear up acne though, and with the regimented cleanse, I am sure that it would be nothing but good for the skin, especially since it doesn’t contain any known irritants to the skin, and also because of the internal cleansing the diet itself helps to do to the body, which always helps the skin out, no matter what your skin problems are, as many people can attest to.
My sister did the full ten days on the Master Cleanser diet, and she said her skin looked really amazing, so I do have someone I trust who told me from personal experience that this diet helped their skin. Sorry I couldn’t help you out more on this one, but I really found that the diet is pretty tough, especially if you’re someone who loves to eat, like me

BWC Vitamin C and CoQ10 Face Wash Review
I have a really good suggestion for those that may have skin like mine which is a person in their early thirties who needs to address not only breakout and acne concerns, but also needs to address their anti aging concerns. You may be able to go through a somewhat transitional phase with your cleansers and moisturizers, which is what I have felt I’ve been able to do as my skin has aged.
It used to be that I had to use a certain kind of cleanser with no moisturizing agents or anti aging ingredients in it to get my skin to stay clear, and I find that now that my oil production has died down a bit (barely, but it has a little so I can tell I’m aging lol), I can use products now that feel great on my skin and don’t leave it dry at all.
One such product I’ve recently purchased and really like is by BWC, Beauty Without Cruelty. It’s a very reasonably priced product, I think it was like eight bucks or maybe even seven for this face wash, and it is gentle and has great, organic ingredients in it. It is also a pretty generous size, and the cleanser is a clear liquid, which is best for acne prone skin in my opinion - far better than solid bar soap and colored cleansers with additives and colors, but that’s from my personal experience.
It’s BWC Vitamin C and CoQ10 facial cleanser. It comes in a pump bottle which is great for ease of use, and it holds up fine in the shower, although I have found a bit of leakage around the rim where the pump meets the bottle, but no biggie, and it leaves my skin refreshed and not dry or tight at all, yet it thoroughly cleanses it. Best of all, it’s anti aging in nature and has not broken me out at all, and my skin does tend to be sensitive to vitamin c sometimes, so this is a good sign as well.

Neutrogena Warming Blackhead Cleanser Hardens Up
I had talked about a Neutrogena anti blackhead product several months back - heck, maybe even a year ago now, it’s so hard to keep track of time these days. It’s called Neutrogena Warming Blackhead scrub and cleanser, and it comes in a tube that if you use very little with every use, it could probably last you a really long time.
However, the problem, as my live in boyfriend and I are discovering, is that after you’ve had it a while, the product dries up in it’s tube and becomes impossible to squeeze out through the hole/opening. I even tried warming the tube under the hot shower for a minute or two, since it is in fact a warming formula that responds to heat and becomes liquidy when heated, but to no avail.
I’m thinking it’s designed to expire or become unusable after several months, because I will admit we’ve had it for a long time. We both like it, and use it only on our noses because we both have problems with blackheads on our nose, like most other people, so I’ll probably end up forking over another seven bucks or so to get another tube.
Too bad it didn’t last though. I’m kind of surprised, because it’s really an airtight container too, and we never left it open, but maybe we did something wrong in storing it in the shower. I still would recommend this product if you have stubborn blackheads. Although it doesn’t totally get rid of them, it does appear to help shrink and clear the pores around the nose, and I really hate that look of large pores around the nose area.
