What is Ichthyosis?

February 19, 2011
By

Tweet Just when you start cursing your skin for the various common skin complaints such as aging skin, acne prone skin, oily skin or bumpy, red skin, you read about someone who is struggling with an immense, incurable skin condition, and it really brings things into perspective. At least for a while. I read a heart wrenching story about a little 5 year old girl who was born with a genetic skin disorder called icthyosis. Icthyosis is where the skin is red, irritated and scaly all of the time, almost looking like a bad sunburn. It becomes thick and...

Obagi : Prescription Skincare?

February 7, 2011
By

Tweet There is a skin care product that is so effective in treating sun damaged skin that doctors and dermatologists in Cleveland require their patients to use it prior to getting cosmetic surgery.  The name of this skin care product is Obagi Nu-Derm and it is not highly publicized. The dermatologists recommend using this product for 6 to 8 weeks prior to surgery since this is the length of skin renewal cycle.  These dermatologists feel the results of their cosmetic surgery are much better when the skin is prepped with Obagi Nu-Derm as the skin’s texture is better going...

December 24, 2010
By

Tweet I know it’s a bit premature and all, considering it’s really only Christmas Eve, and not even the evening at that, but like many other on tomorrow’s very special day, I will be indisposed to write to you. You, my dear readers, are the very reason that I started this blog, and you are the very reason I will keep it going until I can no longer write Acne prone skin is never easy to deal with, but it’s nice to know you have others out there that go through the exact same thing as you, and it’s...

Thoughts on Inflammation and Acne

December 3, 2010
By

Tweet Sometimes I have experiences that are thought provoking (wow, interesting revelation I hear you saying, and it’s ok because I’m even making fun of myself for that).  And when I say thought provoking, I mean that they prompt me to start thinking in certain patterns, in certain ways about things in life that not only have to do with health and beauty, but also about how incredibly intuitive the body is, and how incredibly interlinked all the body’s processes are. The thought I had this time, of course, was about acne, and more specifically about my experiences with...

Can Your Skin Build a Tolerance to Caffeine?

September 30, 2010
By

Tweet I’ve long told of how my skin reacts very negatively to powerful caffeine drinks or supplements, or to any other powerful stimulant for that matter. These include, but are not limited to guarana, certain types of ginseng, vicodin and any other type of prescription painkiller pretty much, and many diet supplements that contain things like concentrated green tea or other stimulants that work on the central nervous system. Why exactly, I can’t be sure, but it’s most likely because their ability to stimulate the central nervous system also gives them the ability to disrupt many people’s hormonal balance....

Can Sweat Cause or Aggravate Acne?

August 25, 2010
By

Tweet If you’re wondering what brought this post to mind, it’s because I’m sitting her at my computer, exhausted, after a long day in a close to ninety degree day in the hot sun, working my you know what off in my gardens and also helping my hubby with the lawn and yard care.  I dug holes, plants shrubs, got down and dirty digging rocks out of the ground, spread mulch, spread heavy topsoil, and pushed a heavy mower back and forth. It’s safe to say that I’m pretty pooped, and yes it’s safe to say that I also...

Why is Society So Obsessed with Perfect Skin?

July 20, 2010
By

Tweet Not only do people want to feel good all the time, they want to look good all the time. And sometimes looking good is far more important then feeling good. The obsession over perfect skin is the people need to look great, almost perfect. Reaching the scale of perfect nowadays requires surgical treatment that can be dangerous if not handled properly. Normally, when people have unwanted healthy issues with the skin, they prefer to have good skin instead of perfect. They will do anything to solve the healthy skin problems which can further endanger health. These procedures are...

Why Does Stress Sometimes Lead to Acne Breakouts?

May 3, 2010
By

Tweet Many people view stress as just an emotional issue, but when we’re speaking about acne, it is best to include undue physical strain in our definition since both can come into play. Ask any teen who suffers from acne and many will tell you that their skin seems to break out more when they are feeling stressed. In fact, emotional stress has long been believed to have an impact on acne severity. Which is the first organ that is affected by stress? You got it……your skin! This happens because, when your body is stressed, the increase in stress...

Can Your Skin “Hear”?

April 13, 2010
By

Tweet I just read the most interesting article on a theory that we don’t just hear with our ears, rather our skin may serve as a part of the reason that we receive auditory messages that are then translated by our brains into understandable language.  Betcha didn’t think that your skin was one of the organs you could actually do anything else with? The study is based on the theory that we don’t use any one organ to do anything, particularly sensory duties like sight and hearing. Rather, our whole bodies sort of act as synthesized, harmonious listening, seeing,...

Replace Coffee with Green Tea for Better Skin

March 29, 2010
By

Tweet I’m really trying to eliminate coffee from my diet lately. Not only because I load it with creamer, sugar and stevia as an artificial sweetener (I use both real sugar and fake since it helps it taste a little more authentically sweet), but I also, for whatever reason, break out from drinking coffee and not from drinking green tea.  They are both caffeinated, I guess it’s just that coffee is a little more intense perhaps on the caffeine content. Another reason I prefer drinking green tea is because it is such a subtle, light flavor, and you don’t...
